Abstract
The presentation explores the life, pedagogical beliefs, and civic stance of Oleksa Tykhyi (1927–1984), a Ukrainian teacher, human rights advocate, dissident, and member of the Ukrainian Public Group to Promote the Implementation of the Helsinki Accords. His life illustrates the connection between the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and a Ukrainian intellectual’s protest against Soviet occupation policies, ideological pressure, and the Russification of education. The presentation examines Tykhyi’s pedagogical views, his commitment to the Ukrainian language, and his understanding of human and national dignity and the moral responsibility of teachers. Particular attention is paid to his persecution for his convictions, imprisonment, participation in the human rights movement, and the circumstances of his death and reburial. Oleksa Tykhyi’s legacy is presented as an example of moral resilience, fidelity to personal convictions, and a teacher’s responsibility to society. The presentation was prepared by Oleksandr Mikhno, Doctor of Sciences (in Pedagogy) and Director of the Pedagogical Museum of Ukraine, for a speech at the Embassy of Hungary in Ukraine marking the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
