Abstract

The article is devoted to highlighting the issue of students’ psychological well-being in the context of democratizing the educational space of general secondary education institutions. Democratization of education is considered as a systemic process of integrating democratic principles at different levels of the functioning of the educational system — from strategic governance of educational policy to the organization of internal activities of institutions, which ensures the formation of conscious citizens of a democratic society. Strategic, organizational, instructional-methodological, spatial-cultural, and personal levels are distinguished, specified in the corresponding aspects: legislation, school management, educational process, educational environment, and the development of participants in the educational process. Particular attention is paid to the personal level, within which it is substantiated that students’ psychological well-being is an important condition for the democratization of the modern school. Based on empirical research, an analysis of students’ assessments of their psychological well-being was carried out. The highest ratings were given to friendly relationships, trust and mentoring support from teachers, as well as the development of prosociality, autonomy, purposefulness, and responsibility. At the same time, several areas were identified that require improvement — the development of an optimistic attitude towards life, self acceptance and the ability to take care of oneself, increasing satisfaction with learning and strengthening the emotional connection with the school; consideration of students’ opinions by teachers and improvement of the culture of relationships between students and teachers; expansion of dialogical interaction among students and the creation of opportunities for dialogue and participation; strengthening student self government and involving students in the discussion of school issues and decision making processes. The assessment of students’ psychological well-being was regarded as an important practice of democratizing the educational environment.
