Abstract
The article characterizes complex tasks in the authors’ chemistry textbooks as a tool for implementing the competency-based approach in teaching students of Grades 7–9 of the New Ukrainian School. The essential characteristics of such tasks are substantiated, including contextuality, integrative nature, practical orientation, and variability of learning activities. Based on the analysis of the authors’ chemistry textbooks, the study reveals the potential of these tasks for developing scientific literacy and demonstrates their alignment with the three groups of learning outcomes in the natural science educational area in accordance with the national assessment requirements. Using a complex task on caffeine as an example, the article describes in detail the didactic sequence of students’ learning activities, including calculations, information processing, and explaining the effects of the substance on the human body. The methodological features of implementing complex tasks in face-to-face, distance, and blended learning environments are outlined.
