Abstract
The publication presents an analysis of empirical research findings on the role of higher education in preparing youth for life and activity in a democracy. Particular attention is focused on the specifics of preparing higher education students to fulfill key social roles: the Individual, Family Member, Citizen, and Professional. Based on a comparative analysis of Soviet and contemporary Ukrainian educational paradigms, the study reveals the evolution of the university mission, identifies the disciplinary imbalance between professional and socio-humanitarian training vectors in modern higher education institutions (HEIs), evaluates the degree of freedom in educational choice, and examines the institutional barriers to developing students’ civic agency. The study empirically substantiates the link between personal resilience and life satisfaction on the one hand, and the credibility of HEIs’ declarations regarding students’ socio-humanitarian development, the scope of socio-humanitarian curricula, and the adequacy of acquired socio-humanitarian knowledge on the other. It highlights the outcomes of a SWOT analysis of socio-humanitarian education in contemporary Ukraine, substantiates plausible prognostic scenarios for its further trajectory, provides a set of multi-level recommendations to address current challenges, and presents a strategic framework for advancing socio-humanitarian education to foster the resilience of Ukrainian society during wartime and post-war recovery. The publication is addressed to educational policy-makers and administrators, developers of higher education standards, HEI leadership, academic program coordinators, researchers, university faculty, student self-government bodies, civil society representatives, and all stakeholders committed to the transformation of higher education in Ukraine and the development of mechanisms to safeguard the democratic foundations of Ukrainian society.
