Abstract
This abstract presents the results of an empirical study on the activation of psychological defense mechanisms in married couples during wartime. Particular attention is focused on protective and defensive psychological defense mechanisms, as identified using O. Kocharyan’s questionnaire. Protective mechanisms primarily encompass unconscious forms of psychological defense, including repression, denial of difficulties, regression, and reactive formation. Defensive mechanisms are represented by partially conscious forms of psychological defense, which include rationalization, intellectualization, and isolation. The results of the correlation analysis revealed statistically significant relationships between psychological defense mechanisms and the respondents’ emotional states. A moderate positive correlation was found between defensive mechanisms and measures of anxiety and depression. In the female subsample, moderate positive correlations were found between hostility and defensive mechanisms, as well as between general aggression and protective mechanisms. In the male subsample, strong positive correlations were found between defensive mechanisms and measures of anger, hostility, and general aggression. Moderate activation of both protective (unconscious) and defensive (partially conscious) defense mechanisms helps maintain the individual’s internal stability; at the same time, their excessive activation can hinder open communication and the constructive resolution of marital conflicts. The results obtained provide grounds for considering psychological defense mechanisms as one of the components of an individual’s adaptation to the prolonged stress caused by wartime events.
