Abstract

Zikieiev D. Ye. Psychological Conditions for the Formation of Metacommunication in Managers of an International Company. – A qualifying scientific work, manuscript. Doctoral dissertation for a scientific degree of a Doctor of Philosophy on a specialty 053 Psychology (05 – Social and Behavioral Sciences). State Institution of Higher Education “University of Education Management” National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv, 2026. Annotation content The dissertation is devoted to the study of the problem of psychological conditions for the formation of metacommunication in managers of an international company. The object of the dissertation research is metacommunication in the professional activity of managers of an international company; the subject is the psychological conditions for the formation of metacommunication in managers of an international company. The aim of the research was to theoretically substantiate and empirically investigate the psychological conditions for the formation of metacommunication in managers of an international company, and to develop relevant methodological recommendations. In line with the aim of the dissertation “Psychological Conditions for the Formation of Metacommunication in Managers of an International кompany”, the following research tasks were accomplished: 1. Based on theoretical and methodological analysis, the content, structure, and psychological conditions for the formation of metacommunication in managers of an international company were defined. 2. A theoretical model of the psychological conditions for the formation of metacommunication in managers of an international company was substantiated. 3. Diagnostic battery for measuring the metacommunicative ability of managers of an international company were developed and adapted. 4. The psychological conditions for the formation of the metacommunicative ability of managers of an international company were mpirically investigated, and relevant methodological recommendations were developed. The study was conducted among managers from international companies, as well as other professionals who constituted the comparison sample. At the stage of pilot testing of the psychodiagnostic instruments, 170 individuals participated in the study; at the stage of psychometric testing and the main empirical research – 295 individuals, with a total of 465 participants. Sample geography: Ukraine (66,8%), the USA (10,2%), China (4,7%), other countries (18,3%). The dissertation consists of an introduction, three chapters, conclusions, a list of references, and appendices. The first chapter analyzes the theoretical foundations for the study of the psychological conditions for the formation of metacommunication in managers of an international company. Four shifts in the understanding of metacommunication are identified: from the phatic function of language to “communication about communication”; from a separate act to a structural aspect of any communication; from a universal phenomenon to disciplinary specification; from an interpersonal context to multi-agent interaction with AI. Seven approaches to the study of metacommunication are systematized; the eco-facilitative approach (ECPF) is defined as the leading methodology of the study. It is established that metacommunication performs the functions of regulating relationships, framing messages, maintaining contact, oordinating interpretations, and repairing communication breakdowns. A multidimensional model of metacommunication is substantiated (metacommunicativeness as a trait, ability for metacommunication, metacommunicative process, metacommunicative competence), and the “ability” dimension is defined as the subject of operationalization across five dimensions: implicit sensitivity, reflexive monitoring, explicit metacommunication (interpersonal context), and reflexive internalization, procedural metacommunication (context of interaction with AI). The conditions for the formation of metacommunication are organize technological). The typological space of the model is formed by the types of metacommunication and the types of conditions for its formation. It is substantiated that the context of international management generates a need for the ability for metacommunication as a professional characteristic, and that, by the nature of their activity, a manager acts as an eco-facilitator of communicative processes. The second chapter substantiates the research methodology, describes the sample, and presents the development of a bilingual psychodiagnostic battery. The study was implemented in four stages (pilot, n = 170; main diagnostic, n = 295; was 465. The author’s diagnostic battery was developed in two language versions and includes the Metacommunication Scale (MCS-17); the Human–AI Metacommunication Scale (HUMAI-MCS); and the AI Interaction Experience Questionnaire (AI-IEQ). A Ukrainian-language adaptation of the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES-UA-14) and a psychometric validation of the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS) were carried out. To operationalize the individualpsychological and organizational-psychological conditions, standardized instruments in Ukrainian and English were used: the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI), a Psychological Safety questionnaire, the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS-12), an Occupational Self-Efficacy questionnaire, the WHO-5 Well-Being Index, and an Intersubjectivity diagnostic measure. The assembled bilingual psychodiagnostic battery of 11 instruments operationalizes the theoretical model of the study. The third chapter presents the results of the empirical study of the psychological conditions for the formation of metacommunication in managers of an international company. It was established that managers with international experience have higher cognitive cultural intelligence, communicative confidence, occupational self-efficacy, reflexive internalization, and AI experience. A typology of metacommunication was developed, comprising four types (interpersonally oriented, 23,05%; integrated, 28,81%; passive, 17,29%; AI-oriented, 30,85%). Factor analysis revealed four latent factors of individual-psychological conditions (63,7% of variance): psychological resilience, intercultural capability, openness and activity, and prosocial orientation. Hierarchical multiple regression established different configurations of predictors: the ability for interpersonal metacommunication was associated with intercultural capability, prosocial orientation, and openness and activity, while the ability for metacommunication with AI was associated with AI experience and intercultural capability. Four types of psychological conditions for the formation of metacommunication were identified (Basic, Moderate AI–, Moderate AI+, Complex), and their significant association with the types of metacommunications was established: from the Basic to the Complex configuration, the proportion of the integrated type increases from 11,1% to 64,1%. AI experience serves as an additional differentiating condition: its presence is associated with a threefold higher proportion of the integrated type. Methodological recommendations for the formation of metacommunication in managers of an international company were developed on the basis of the ecofacilitative approach: a 4 × 4 transition matrix with 16 specialist positions, and a system of 12 prompts that operationalize the HUMAI transition space as a reflexive environment with a regulated level of communicative uncertainty. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that, for the first time, a multidimensional model of metacommunication and a theoretical model of the psychological conditions for its formation, with three circuits and a typological space, were substantiated; an author's diagnostic battery (in Ukrainian and English) was developed for measuring the ability for interpersonal metacommunication (MCS-17), the ability for metacommunication in interaction with AI (HUMAI-MCS), and the experience of using AI (AI-IEQ). The study empirically confirmed the two-dimensional structure of the metacommunicative space and, on this basis, developed a typology of metacommunication and a typology of the psychological conditions for its formation, establishing links between the types of both typologies. Different predictor configurations were identified for the interpersonal and AI dimensions of metacommunication. Intolerance of uncertainty showed opposite associations with the two dimensions. The role of AI experience was established as an additional condition for the formation of metacommunication. Author’s definitions of the key concepts were formulated. The understanding of metacommunication as a multidisciplinary phenomenon was deepened. Further development was achieved for: the eco-facilitative approach, through the implementation of a matrix model of typological transitions in the context of metacommunication formation; and the understanding of the Human–AI transition space (HUMAI) as an environment for the formation of metacommunication. The study’s methodological contributions include the cross-cultural adaptation of the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES-UA-14) and the development of methodological recommendations grounded in the eco-facilitative approach. The practical significance of the results lies in the development of a bilingual diagnostic toolkit and methodological recommendations for the formation of metacommunication in managers of international companies on the basis of the ecofacilitative approach. The typology of metacommunication with its targets for change, the transition matrix with reference points organized by blocks of conditions, and the system of AI prompts as a reflexive environment together create a tool for becoming aware of one’s own position and prospects within the space of metacommunication formation. The results can be applied in organizational consulting, in the professional development of managers, and in training courses in organizational psychology and intercultural management.
