Abstract

The article examines photographic documents from the collections of the Pedagogical Museum of Ukraine as a source for studying the history of school physical education in the second half of the 20th century. The source base comprises more than 80 photographic documents from the 1940s–1980s that reflect various aspects of pupils’ physical education. The photographs are thematically classified into three groups: photographs of physical education lessons, extracurricular sports sections and clubs, and pupils’ sports competitions and achievements. Particular attention is paid to the regional dimension of the materials and to the potential of visual sources for reconstructing everyday school practices, the organization of physical education lessons, interactions between pupils and teachers, material and technical provision, and the development of school sports infrastructure. The study substantiates the significance of photographic documents held in the museum collection for expanding the source base of historical and pedagogical research and for introducing visual materials into scholarly circulation.
