Abstract
The thesis examines the role of a system of cognitive tasks in forming the key and subject competences of lower secondary school students in chemistry lessons in grades 8–9, in accordance with the requirements of the State Standard of Basic Secondary Education (2020). The multifaceted understanding of the concept of a cognitive task is revealed in its didactic-methodological, psychological, linguistic and gnoseological aspects, which makes it possible to design tasks that simultaneously form declarative and procedural knowledge in students. The typology of cognitive chemistry tasks is characterised according to the nature of students' cognitive activity: tasks for assimilating ready-made experience of chemical cognition and tasks for producing knowledge through students' own activity and is correlated with the outcome groups of the natural science educational branch. It is substantiated that a system of cognitive tasks ensures a balanced profile of students cognitive activity and serves as the leading mechanism for organising chemistry instruction under the New Ukrainian School (NUS) reform.
