Abstract

To achieve success in their personal and professional lives, current and future graduates of educational institutions (including general education, vocational, and higher education institutions) must be prepared and capable not only to acquire new theoretical knowledge and keep it up to date, but also to adapt to and successfully overcome unforeseen challenges. This growing number of unpredictable challenges underscores the need to equip students not only with solid theoretical knowledge but also with flexible skills. In the paper, the authors analyze expert and analytical materials from international organizations to examine the role of critical thinking within the framework of soft skills and to identify key trends in contemporary international education policy regarding its development among students at various levels (including general secondary education). Expert and analytical materials from international organizations such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Economic Forum, the United Nations Children’s Fund, and Reboot Foundation were analyzed. The analysis shows that there are currently various approaches to classifying soft skills. However, critical thinking is regarded as one of the soft skills, and its importance is emphasized across all the analyzed expert and analytical materials. In the analyzed expert and analytical reports by international organizations, the term “soft skills” is equated with concepts such as “life skills,” “transferable skills,” “social-emotional skills,” and “21st-century skills,” which can lead to inconsistencies in the conceptual framework and to certain complications during the implementation of national education policies in various countries around the world. The authors find that the integration of traditional academic education with social-emotional learning, which involves the use of innovative educational technologies in the educational process, ensures the effective preparation of students at various levels (including those in general secondary education) for a successful personal life and future productive professional activity in the context of a digital society.
