Abstract
The article examines the issue of functional differentiation between the subjects Legal Studies and Civic Education in Grade 9 of the New Ukrainian School, as well as the pedagogical approaches to their teaching. The relevance of the study is driven by the need to reduce overlap and duplication of learning content and to optimise the educational process within a single curricular field under conditions of limited teaching time. A concept of content-based and methodological differentiation was developed and practically tested. It is grounded in the distinction between two learning focuses: the normative-procedural dimension (for legal education) and the value-based participatory dimension (for civic education). The proposed framework distinguishes between the objective components of legal regulation (norms, procedures, institutional mechanisms), which constitute the core of Legal Studies, and the subjective dimensions of civic competence (identity, values, active participation), which form the foundation of Civic Education. The article presents the author’s pedagogical toolkit designed to support differentiated instruction across both subjects. The models Methodological Square and Methodological Bridge enable students to move from an awareness of static legal norms to meaningful forms of civic action and democratic engagement. Special attention is given to the author’s concept of the Thematic Node as a tool for synchronising instruction while preserving the functional autonomy of the subjects. The article provides practical examples to illustrate differentiated learning focuses within shared concepts such as human rights, community, and democracy. The study demonstrates that clear differentiation of content helps to reduce the risk of methodological inertia and creates productive synergy within the civic and historical educational field. The empirical basis of the study includes the results of a nationwide pilot implementation, data on textbook selection, and an analysis of professional community feedback collected during thematic webinars. The practical value of the study consists in the development of specific strategies for planning the teaching of these courses within the framework of the basic secondary education reform.
