Abstract

The article examines the phenomenon of political myth as one of the key elements of the contemporary symbolic space of politics and an important mechanism for shaping mass political consciousness. It argues that under conditions of social instability, the transformation of political institutions, and shifts in value orientations, political myth performs integrative, communicative, worldview, and mobilizing functions, helping to overcome cognitive uncertainty and construct a coherent perception of political reality. It is demonstrated that myth is not only a means of symbolically interpreting political processes but also an effective instrument for the struggle for power, the legitimization of authority, the construction of political identities, and the dissemination of new value orientations. The study analyzes the nature of the contemporary political myth, its structural components, principal characteristics, and mechanisms of functioning. Particular attention is devoted to the interaction between the rational and irrational components of political consciousness, as well as to the role of archetypes, symbols, rituals, mythologems, and personified images in the process of political communication. It is established that the contemporary political myth constitutes an integrated symbolic system that combines historical experience, collective memory, social expectations, and political interests, thereby ensuring the emotional perception of political reality. The article also considers the specific features of political myth-making during periods of societal crisis, when traditional ideological constructs lose their capacity to maintain social consensus. Drawing on the example of transformational processes in Ukraine and the post-Soviet region, it demonstrates that the erosion of previous political myths is naturally accompanied by the emergence of new symbolic models reflecting changes in public expectations, political values, and patterns of political behavior. Special attention is paid to the influence of political myths on the formation of the image of the political leader, the mobilization of citizens, the construction of national identity, and the legitimization of political power. The study concludes that political myth remains an integral component of the contemporary political process, combining the functions of explanation, integration, symbolic construction of social reality, and the management of mass consciousness. In the context of global societal transformations, its significance is not diminishing but rather taking on new forms, making it one of the most effective instruments of political communication and the formation of society's value orientations.
