Abstract

This paper examines the transformation of the content of general secondary education based on a competence-based approach within the European and domestic educational contexts. It analyses the evolution of EU strategic documents that have defined the list of key competences as a combination of knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for the successful self-realisation of the individual in the modern world. The essence of innovative approaches to the development of key competences is substantiated, and successful practices in the implementation of competence-based learning in foreign countries are described. Particular attention is paid to the development of transversal skills (critical thinking, creativity, and the ability to learn throughout life) and the introduction of new teaching methods. The experience of implementing the competence-based approach in Ukraine is highlighted, in particular through the ‘New Ukrainian School’ reform, in the context of building an innovative educational environment and harmonising national standards with international requirements.
