Abstract

This article explores Ukraine’s challenges in ensuring the transmission of socio-humanitarian knowledge into society – a critical indicator of democratic resilience. It highlights key parameters that shape the sustainability of a democratic society under the influence of socio-humanitarian education: understanding and acceptance of democratic values, the stability of democratic institutions, and the existential significance of democratic symbols. The study demonstrates that a state-led systemic transmission of the objective meanings of these parameters positively affects citizens’ political culture, civic engagement, social responsibility, critical thinking, and ability to maintain constructive dialogue at interpersonal, national, and geopolitical levels. Using the case of language competence development among Ukrainian citizens –where language is presented as a vital democratic symbol – the article argues that marginalizing socio-humanitarian knowledge has geopolitical consequences. It identifies criteria for transmitting objective meanings of democratic phenomena (ideology, educational content, institutional autonomy, knowledge dissemination channels, and the role of the individual), which can be used to determine the direction of civic preparation within specific socio-political coordinates. The article reveals differences in the transmission of socio-humanitarian knowledge between democratic societies and authoritarian/totalitarian regimes. It substantiates that the nature of such transmission serves as an indicator of the ideological orientation chosen by political elites, with the degree of openness and objectivity directly influencing a society’s capacity for democratic development. The role of national elites in ensuring the systemic, continuous, and accessible provision of socio-humanitarian education is emphasized. Ultimately, socio-humanitarian education is shown to be not only of cultural or academic significance at the local level but also a strategic instrument for defending and advancing democracy globally.
