Abstract

The syllabus of the compulsory course "Social Mediation and Facilitation" (PP.09) is designed for master's level students in the field of study I "Health Care and Social Security", specialty I10 "Social Work and Counselling", educational and scientific programme "Social Work. Social Rehabilitation". The course comprises 4 ECTS credits (120 hours) and concludes with an examination. The aim of the course is to develop students' systematic knowledge of the theoretical foundations, principles and technologies of mediation and facilitation, together with practical skills in applying them in the professional activity of a social worker for the constructive resolution of conflicts, the organisation of group work, the facilitation of dialogue between different social groups, and the advancement of social partnership. The content covers eight topics: the concepts, principles, legal framework and ethical foundations of mediation and facilitation, and the roles of the mediator and facilitator; the theoretical foundations of conflictology (the theories of L. Coser, R. Dahrendorf and J. Galtung, F. Glasl's model of conflict escalation, the Thomas–Kilmann conflict modes, and M. Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication); models of mediation (facilitative, evaluative, transformative, narrative), their fields of application, and the criteria of a conflict's mediability; the stages and techniques of the mediation process (active listening, reframing, emotion management, caucus, drafting the agreement, online mediation); the facilitation of group processes and group dynamics according to B. Tuckman; structured facilitation methods (World Café, Open Space Technology, Circle Process, Six Thinking Hats) and methods of group decision-making; the application of mediation and facilitation in social conflicts, work with internally displaced persons, and dialogue practices in post-war society; and the integration of mediation and facilitation skills into social work practice, including supervision, reflective practice and burnout prevention. The syllabus sets out the course structure, topics of lectures and seminars, tasks for independent and individual work, examination questions, teaching and assessment methods, grading criteria and scale, as well as recommended literature and information resources.
