Abstract

Implementation of modern educational approaches aimed at increasing the level of clinical pharmacological competence of pharmaceutical and medical professionals in order to optimize pharmacotherapy and safe use of medicines. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of the impact of an online continuous professional development program on optimizing pharmacotherapy in patients with coronary artery disease with comorbid conditions. The study was retrospective and included an analysis of pharmacotherapy regimens from two patient samples: for the period 2017-2018 (n = 225) and 2024-2025 (n = 135). Pharmacists, doctors and nurses were involved in the training. The study results showed that after the implementation of the online continuing professional development program, there was a statistically significant decrease in the level of polypharmacy (Z = 5.56554; p = 0.000362; adjusted for likelihood p = 0.00225), a decrease in the frequency of undesirable potential pharmacodynamic synergisms (Z = 3.13567; p = 0.001495; adjusted for likelihood p = 0.01093), as well as a decrease in the total number of potential drug interactions (Z = 2.47488; p = 0.013329; adjusted for likelihood p = 0.012841). The results obtained indicate that the implementation of online continuing professional development programs is an effective tool in training pharmaceutical and medical professionals to optimize pharmacotherapy of CHD with comorbid conditions by reducing the use of unacceptable polypharmacy and the frequency of possible occurrence of potential drug interactions. It is advisable to further implement structured educational components in clinical pharmacology in continuing professional development programs in the field of safe use of medicines.
