Abstract

The article provides a comprehensive theoretical, methodological, historical, and pedagogical analysis of the role of historical memory and commemorative practices in the formation of civic consciousness, national identity, and spiritual culture of student youth in higher education institutions of Ukraine during the period 2005–2021. The essence of historical memory as a socio-cultural phenomenon is revealed, and its place within the system of national-patriotic education is defined. Emphasis is placed on a complex analysis of historical memory and commemorative practices as important educational tools for shaping civic consciousness, national identity, and spiritual culture among students in Ukrainian higher education institutions during 2005–2021. Particular attention is given to the institutional level of memory policy implementation, including the activities of specific universities and departments, as well as a comparative analysis of models of its implementation in different types of higher education institutions. Commemorative practices are analyzed as instruments for the institutionalization of memory policy in the university environment, including memorial events, educational projects, academic conferences, museum activities, and public history initiatives. The main stages of transformation of memory policy during the studied period and their impact on the content and forms of educational and воспитальна work in higher education institutions are identified. It is proven that commemorative practices were integrated into the educational process through humanities disciplines, academic research, educational activities, and public history, acquiring a systemic character. Differences in the implementation of these practices in pedagogical, classical, and research universities are established. It is substantiated that historical memory and commemorative practices serve as an effective educational tool for the formation of civic responsibility, national self-awareness, and spiritual values among student youth. The article also presents a comprehensive interdisciplinary analysis of historical memory and commemorative practices in higher education institutions of Ukraine as a mechanism for forming civic consciousness, national identity, and spiritual culture of students during 2005–2021. Conceptual approaches of modern memory studies, sociology of culture, and political anthropology to understanding memory as a social construct are revealed. The transformation of educational programs and curricula in leading Ukrainian universities (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, and pedagogical universities) is analyzed, as well as the specifics of institutionalization of memory policy through university departments and educational components. Models of implementing historical memory in the university environment are identified: cultural-institutional, educational-practical, interdisciplinary, and regional. It is demonstrated that commemorative practices serve as a key instrument for the emotional and value-based consolidation of historical experience.
