Abstract
The tragic events caused by the war in Ukraine have resulted not only in a profound traumatic impact but also in deep transformations within the inner world of each individual. Ukrainian society is facing a large-scale psychological crisis that has affected every aspect of life – from a basic sense of safet to fundamental perceptions of the self, others, and the future. The war has intensified existential experiences, prompting individuals to rethink their very existence, to reconsider their worldview, values, desires, and aspirations. Today, one of the key tasks of psychological support is to help individuals cope with internal crises, the loss of life direction, emotional instability, and to foster the development of new, constructive orientations. This makes it especially important to study how war reshapes the inner world of the individual and to examine the psychological and value-based shifts that occur as a result of traumatic experiences – in order to help people, despite pain and negative life experiences, access their inner resources for recovery and post-traumatic growth. The article presents the results of a study aimed at conducting a qualitative analysis of the psychological changes experienced by Ukrainians during the war. The analysis identified 15 thematic response categories, including: «reassessment of life values», «emergence of a new life perspective», «fear», «disappointment in oneself» and others, «activation of the desire to act» and others. The most common reaction was a re-evaluation of personal values. Additionally, the study examined the general trends in emotional response – specifically, the emotional tone of the responses (negative, neutral, or positive) and the corresponding shifts in value orientations. The findings offer insights into the most widespread worldview transformations currently taking place among Ukrainians. They also highlight the importance of providing psychological support not only through crisis intervention, but also through the lens of existential analysis, humanistic psychology, and a deeper understanding of the meaning people assign to traumatic events – and how this meaning influences their subsequent life, decisions, emotions, faith, and hope.
