Abstract
The article substantiates the didactic potential of foreign language education in the development of cross-curricular skills of students in grades 7–9 of gymnasium. The essence of the concept of “cross-curricular skills” is clarified, and the directions for their development in the process of foreign language teaching are outlined. It is emphasized that the potential of foreign language education in developing students’ cross-curricular skills lies in the possibility of organizing the learning process on the basis of competence-based, communicative, and activity-oriented approaches. This encourages teachers to apply interactive methods and modern teaching tools, including digital resources, which stimulate the development of critical thinking, the ability to analyze and interpret information, defend one’s own position, and work collaboratively. Based on the analysis of scientific sources, it is established that the potential of foreign language education in developing cross-curricular skills is determined by its communicative-activity and sociocultural orientation, which provides conditions for the comprehensive development of the individual. In this context, foreign language education is not only a means of developing communicative competence, but also an effective tool for fostering universal ways of learning and activity necessary for students’ successful self-realization. It is found that foreign language education involves students in all types of language activities, which contributes to the development of their ability to perceive and analyze information comprehensively, work with various sources of information, and thus ensures the integrated development of both communicative and cognitive skills of learners. The study identifies that effective directions for developing cross-curricular skills of students in grades 7–9 in the process of foreign language teaching include systematic engagement in reading, expressing personal opinions, teamwork, and the development of creativity.
