Abstract
The theses highlight the didactic and methodological principles of designing a system of exercises and tasks as a means of developing mechanisms of foreign language communication in students of grades 7–9. The role of the system of exercises in the development of students’ speech skills and abilities in accordance with competence-based, activity-based, and communicative approaches is outlined. Special attention is paid to the selection of exercises that correspond to students’ age characteristics, curriculum requirements, and current trends in foreign language teaching.
