Abstract
The article reveals the meaning of the concept of "research competence". The interactive content of the geography textbook in the formation of research competence in gymnasium students is substantiated. Based on the analysis of scientific research, the educational potential of geography, virtual trips, digital maps in the content of the textbook for the development of research competence is revealed. It is determined that modern geographical education can become an effective means of training future researchers if digital resources are integrated into the educational process: interactive maps, virtual tours, digital models of the territory, which stimulate the development of research skills and research thinking, etc. The author of the article developed and tested a methodology for the formation of research competences in geography lessons using existing textbooks, which includes three interrelated components: cognitive (knowledge, thinking, mental activity), emotional (empathy: attitude to the science of geography), activity (creation of one's own research). The methodology was tested at advanced training courses for geography teachers in Kyiv and Transcarpathia regions (132 participants). The results confirmed that the use of this methodology improves the quality of teachers' methodological activities, activates their own professional competence, and also contributes to the formation of holistic research competencies in students.
