Abstract
An attitude toward one's own health as a reality that an individual can actively influence facilitates the reframing and assimilation of experiences gained during the war. Furthermore, the way these experiences are interpreted is crucial for achieving a more stable sense of inner balance, equilibrium, and psychological well-being. Under threatening wartime circumstances, which are potentially dangerous and tend to become traumatic, psychological well-being largely depends on whether individuals manage to acknowledge the degree of danger in a timely manner without dramatizing it. The ability to switch focus, shift dominants, and manifest flexibility is becoming increasingly desirable and in demand. Available resources accumulate within an individual's psychological capital, and the responsibility for its status becomes a primary task. Among the accessible and vital ways to accumulate psychological capital in exhausting and dangerous life situations is the phenomenon of self-care. A lack of self-acceptance, a poor attitude toward one's health, and excessive demandingness or self-criticism are hazardous to psychological well-being, especially during times of severe trial. Psychologists and psychotherapists should focus specifically on increasing an individual’s attention to themselves and their health. Self-preservation practices, combined with improving the adequacy of health self-assessment and relinquishing illusorily optimistic self-expectations, contribute to the replenishment of resource potential.
