Abstract
The methodological guide is devoted to the development of cultural awareness and self-expression competence among third-grade students in the process of studying Jewish tradition in multilingual and intercultural learning environments. The content of the guide has been developed on the basis of research conducted within the project “Jewish Rainbow: Professional Development, Communication, Language, Culture in Jewish Education” and constitutes a logical and substantial continuation of the series “Codes of Jewish Culture for Children.” The publication of this series, including the present methodological guide, has been made possible through the support of the Dutch Jewish Humanitarian Fund (JHF). The guide presents the scientific and methodological foundations and approaches to fostering cultural awareness and self-expression as key competences of primary school learners. It outlines the specific features of implementing this competence in the teaching of Jewish tradition to third-grade students in multilingual and intercultural contexts. Special attention is given to the experimental teaching materials developed for subsequent implementation and evaluation in educational practice. Based on an in-depth analysis of theoretical sources, the authors define the essence, role, and place of cultural awareness and self-expression competence within the system of key competences; examine methodological principles for its development considering the didactics of multilingual and intercultural education; select relevant content and design experimental teaching materials “Codes of Jewish Culture for Children: Animals and Plants of the Tanakh”; and conduct their evaluation in real educational settings. This methodological guide is intended for researchers, methodologists, teachers, students of teacher-education programs, as well as representatives of educational and community organizations of national minorities and all those interested in competence-based education within multilingual and intercultural contexts and its implementation in Ukrainian general secondary education institutions. The authors express their sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to the preparation and publication of this guide — the authors, reviewers, illustrator, and partners, whose professional support and joint efforts made this publication possible despite numerous challenges.
