Abstract
Today, in view of the renewed relevance of the issue of Ukrainian emigration due to the war of the rf, it is important to highlight the positive experience of emigration in fostering in children and youth respect and love for the Motherland, as well as shaping a citizen-patriot of independent Ukraine abroad. The life and creative legacy of Petro Kholodny (1876–1930) – a Ukrainian scholar, chemist, monumental artist, graphic artist, educator, statesman and political figure, Minister of Education of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, and a fighter for Ukraine’s independence in the 20th century – serve as an example for modern youth, particularly in the process of forming the Ukrainian national and civic identity. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of this outstanding son of Ukraine at the state level. It is noted that this is one of the biographical portraits among many wellknown and lesser-known Ukrainian educators of the diaspora, enriching historical and educational knowledge about their lives and activities, their contribution to the development of national education, and the preservation of Ukrainian identity during forced emigration. This helps to recreate an objective picture and to strengthen research interest in studying and providing information about this phenomenon. It is argued that despite the existence of a sufficient array of sources on the life trajectory of P. Kholodny, it is still relevant to study its lesser-known page – the emigration period. The analysis of sources makes it possible to supplement the biographical portrait of the outstanding Ukrainian, in particular by deepening knowledge about certain aspects: the reasons for forced emigration, the difficulties of life far from the Motherland, and educational and enlightenment activities based on nation-building principles for the sake of Ukraine and its future. The prospects for historical and source-based research are outlined, namely: a thorough study in the archives of the second and third volumes of the Project of a Unified School of Ukraine – Petro Kholodny’s most important conceptual work – as well as his epistolary heritage.
