Abstract

Pharmacists, as accessible primary health-care professionals, play a key role in smoking cessation by providing counseling, recommending nicotine-replacement therapy, and offering motivational support, which can increase smoking-cessation rates by 18–25%. An analysis of pharmaceutical workers’ (PWs) views on their role in combating tobacco smoking as a key element of CVD prevention, as well as on enhancing their contribution to public health, was conducted. A questionnaire was developed based on FIP recommendations regarding the role of pharmacists in tobacco control, WHO data, and national sources on smoking prevalence. The study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach (quantitative and qualitative analysis), including an anonymous online survey of pharmacists from different regions of Ukraine.PWs possess basic knowledge about the consequences of smoking and methods of cessation, but their awareness of national and international programs is limited. Nicotine-replacement therapy was identified as the most commonly used and recommended method of smoking cessation. However, its availability is hindered by high cost, low patient awareness, and a limited product range. Regarding the role of pharmacists in tobacco control, opinions vary: 40% support active participation, while many others consider this primarily the responsibility of physicians.
