Abstract
Taras Shevchenko is the founder not only of new Ukrainian literature, but also of critical realism in the visual arts. The poet dreamed of an independent sovereign Ukrainian state where the language, culture and history of the people are respected. The author of over a thousand works of art (over 160 of his works have been lost). In 1860, his achievements in painting were officially recognized: he was awarded the title of academician. Ten-year exile led to the premature death of T. Shevchenko. Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko believed that the Ukrainian people have every reason to form their own independent state and culture. The poet proves that true education, respect and love for the culture of other peoples are possible only when a person remains on his native soil, respects, knows the culture and language of his own people. Works: "To the dead, the living, and the unborn, my fellow countrymen in Ukraine and outside Ukraine, my friendly message" (1845), "The Little Kobzar", "Ivan Pidkova (to V.I. Shternberg)", "To N. Markevich" (1911) and many others.
