Abstract
Olena Pchilka headed the literary department of the Kyiv Literary and Artistic Society. She co-founded the literary circle Pleiades, was a member of the Kyiv Prosvita, a founder and board member of the Ukrainian Club and the Rodyna Club. In 1906–14, she published the magazine Ridnyi Kray with the supplement Moloda Ukraina (1908–14), and Gazeta Hadyatskogo Zemstvo (1917–19). Since March 1907, Olena Pchilka has been the editor of the magazine Ridnyi Kray. National and social motives constituted the main content of Olena Pchilka's works, in which she spoke out against denationalization, Russification, against national and political oppression, against foreign schools with their soullessness and formalism, and showed by her own example how nationally conscious Ukrainian youth in the era of deaf reaction sought ways to liberate their people. During the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-21 and the Civil War, Olena Pchilka lived in Hadyach. She was the organizer of the Ukrainian Studies group of Hadyach Ukrainian school youth, whose members were students of male and female gymnasiums, a real school, a Higher Primary School, and two-year Pedagogical Courses. Under her leadership, the group organized Shevchenko holidays and staged dramatic works by Ukrainian writers. The writer herself often gave lectures. For children of primary schools in Hadyach, the Ukrainian Studies group organized children's mornings with a diverse program. Language for her was an important means not only of communication, but also of thinking, acquiring knowledge, self-development and self-expression. The writer expressed her views on the development of the Ukrainian language and the Ukrainization of schools in the publications: "A Needle in a Bag", "Why Should We Rejoice?", "Sinytsia" (1917), in the article "Our Literary Language" (1909), in reviews that were regularly published in "Ridny Krai". With the establishment of Soviet power, she was offered a job at the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and was elected a corresponding member (1925). Throughout her life, Olga Petrovna Dragomanova persistently and uncompromisingly fought for the future revival of national culture, for the right to speak, write and print books in her native language. She repeatedly appealed to the tsarist government with a demand to lift the ban on printing and teaching in schools in the Ukrainian language. Olena Pchilka considered educational work to be her civic duty. Works: “Native Language” (1905), “Native Land” (1907), “In the Matter of National Education” (1906), “Word” (1908), “Ukrainization of Schools” (1917) and others.
