Abstract

Due to a full-scale war in Ukraine, stress and tension, anxiety and concern about tomorrow is increasing among the population. Accordingly, people should quickly adapt to changes and uncertainty, to be resilient and productive, and to learn to maintain optimism and faith in the coming better days. And here such a concept as “hardiness” comes to the fore. The article has analysed in detail the generally accepted understanding of the “hardiness” term and has revealed that personality hardiness is in the focus of specialists from various fields, namely psychologists, physiologists and medical doctors, which indicates the relevance and multidimensionality of the studied phenomenon. The article analysed the essential characteristics of hardiness, encompassed by this phenomenon. A wide range of personality traits and characteristics were identified, they represented a system of stable positive personality properties helping a person successfully overcome difficult life situations, contributing to positive changes and rethinking difficult life circumstances, providing strength and encouragement for self-development and self-improvement, and supporting his/her physical, mental and social health. Basing on reviewed modern psychological literature, the article authors share their own vision on hardiness structure, which has allowed them to develop a holistic and detailed structural-functional model of personality hardiness, having two components: reflective and resource ones. The reflective component represents important personal and semantic formations (value orientations, personal autonomy, self-confidence, self-efficacy, self-attitude, life goals and meanings, openness to new, readiness for change, etc.), while the resource component represents personal and instrumental formations (primarily manifesting in character traits such as activities, purposefulness, courage, toughness, endurance, etc.). The authors emphasize that hardiness components presented in the structural-functional model are separate parts of a single holistic personality structure and do not exist separately from each other; they should be taken into account in diagnostic, correctional and developmental work of practical psychologists.
