Abstract

The article focuses on the fact that the persons hardiness is an important psychological factor that determines his behavior, reactions and perception of the life situation. Moreover, it has been proven that one of the main predictors of hardiness is the locus of control. It is emphasized that, in general, the feeling of control is a basic psychological need of a person, caused by the desire to overcome uncertainty. to effectively structure one’s own life activities and achieve the desired goal. Loss of a sense of control is often accompanied by powerlessness, leads to stress and depression, however, at the same time, hyperbolized control of the situation causes significant mental stress and makes normal life activities impossible. Locus of control – determines how strongly a person believes that he controls the situations and events of his life; awareness of the degree of her own responsibility for the results of her own behavior. The locus of control has two orientations – internal and external. People with an external locus of control believe that their decisions are inhibited by external factors such as other people, luck, chance, etc. Moreover, they often blame other people and circumstances for their own failures. In contrast, people with an internal locus of control tend to strongly believe in their own ability to control and influence the situation around them. They believe that their decisions can overcome external factors such as people, luck, and chance. They see their future in their own hands and that their own choices lead to success or failure. However, in case of defeat, they blame themselves. It is worth noting that the locus of control significantly affects the mental health of the individual, in particular, the feeling of powerlessness before the factors of the external world, a low level of internal responsibility often cause a depressive reaction in response to life difficulties. At the same time, a too high level of the internal locus of control causes significant internal mental stress. The results of an empirical study are presented. The main predictors of hardiness are extraversion, control over actions during planning, internality, and internality of failure. The internalization of failures has a negative impact on hardiness, prevents its manifestation, as it is accompanied by self-blame and perfectionism, which leads to helplessness, psychosomatic problems and destructive behavior. Instead, general internality promotes adaptive control, the desire to take responsibility for one’s actions and decisions, the ability to achieve set goals and the desired result; control over actions during planning reduces stress, provides individuals with the awareness that not everything can be controlled, provides an opportunity to adequately assess the degree of their influence on the situation, minimizes internal overstrain; and extroversion helps to preserve the optimism of the individual. It is emphasized that a balanced locus of control is necessary to maintain hardiness and strengthen mental health.
