Abstract

Russia's full-scale aggression in Ukraine has led not only to the deaths and suffering of people, destruction of infrastructure and other material assets, but also to irreparable damage to the environment, natural ecosystems, flora, fauna, air, land and water resources, etc. A significant number of environmentally sensitive and technologically hazardous facilities have been located in the conflict region and areas of active hostilities, sometimes with unpredictable consequences, including industrial and military facilities, energy infrastructure facilities, including nuclear, thermal, and hydroelectric power plants, and environmentally sensitive natural areas (protected areas and nature reserves, and unique biocenoses), and the number of man-made accidents and environmental damage caused by the Russian invasion is so high that the international community and the Ukrainian government consider them to be ecocide - “illegal or unjustified actions committed with the knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood that such actions will cause serious, widespread or lasting damage to the environment”.
