Abstract

The role of media influences in the pathologization of war stress and the development of post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) is actively discussed in the international professional community and constitutes a significant reserve for preserving the mental health of Ukrainians. Ethical issues of research on the impact of media exposure of traumatic war events on the human experience of stress are highlighted. Conceptual dilemmas and a system of hypotheses for the study of media traumatization are indicated, which determine the task of researching the patterns of influence of media exposure of traumatic events on PTSD symptoms. The results of the research conducted in August 2022 with the participation of scientists of the laboratory of psychology of mass communication and media education in cooperation with other institutions are presented in the most generalized form. A significant role of the stressful experience associated with the photos and videos seen in the media was revealed: 43-45% of the participants in the survey of the adult urban population (N=1000) noted such a stressful experience. No significant statistical differences were found between subgroups of real exposure and media exposure in the level of PTSD symptoms.
