Abstract
The article presents the author’s interpretation of the significance of ideas of outstanding Ukrainian philosopher, writer and educator Hryhorii Skovoroda (1722–1794) about achieving a person’s happiness and meaningful life. Based on the reflection of a number of works of this thinker, the relevance of his philosophic ideas is substantiated: firstly, as an inexhaustible source of the Ukrainian spirit; secondly, as an outstanding cultural national treasure that deserves respect and memory; thirdly, as a treasury of ethical instructions on building a happy life by a person, the meaning of which should be self-knowledge. As the Ukrainian educator believed, it is necessary for a person to choose the type of labor that corresponds to his own natural gifts and inclinations, as well as further self-development. Features of H. Skovoroda’s philosophic worldviews are highlighted. It was a complex combination of anthropologism, personalism, mysticism, pantheism, based on the ideas of Orthodoxy, in which he lived and worked. Hryhorii Skovoroda lived in the Ukrainian Baroque era. Thou his philosophical views were largely determined by the peculiarities of the time: the ambiguity of the concepts of “world”, “man”, “God”, “happiness”, the symbolism of the language of his works, the antithetical nature of judgments, and their inherent syncretism. The carried out source search and analysis of the totality of works devoted to the study of the biography and creative heritage of H. Skovoroda gave grounds to assert that, compared to the 20th century, the scientific interest of researchers in his original heritage has not decreased, but increased in the 21st century.
