Abstract

The article suggests a comprehensive approach to analyzing modal particle semantics on the basis of the conceptual apparatus of Relevance Theory. The research findings show that modal particles encode procedural meanings which constrain the inferential phase of utterance interpretation; they guide the hearer towards selecting relevant contexts for the utterance.
