Abstract

The results of empirical research are presented in order to identify socio-psychological factors of citizens’willingness to provide help to persons affected by the military conflict. During the study, in which 243 people participated, it was established that the readiness to engage in volunteering was shown mostly by respondents who didn’t have destructive attitudes in interpersonal relationships (the veiled and outright cruelty towards people, the justified negativism in judgments and tendency to make baseless generalizations upon others, the negative personal experiences of communication). The least association this willingness has with intolerant attitudes towards other people: such respondents are characterized by the desire to adjust their partner to themselves, to make a partner "comfortable"; the demonstration of flatness or conservatism in the estimations of other people; the difficulty in forgiving of others’ mistakes, awkwardness and unintentionally caused troubles; the intolerance to physical or mental discomfort created by other people. It is revealed that the basis of willingness to provide help to others is the persistent belief in the kindness of people and in the benevolence of the outside world, expressed in the trust to their environment. It is determined that citizens who are ready to participate in volunteering activities, in case of a collision with the problem, often prefer the planning and positive revaluation coping strategies. Respondents with a high level of willingness to participate in volunteering activities were more ready to provide various types of help to internally displaced persons, namely, physical and informational, whereas those who are less willing to participate in such activities have higher readiness, first of all, to provide financial support.
