Abstract

The article presents findings of the qualitative and quantitative research onthe psychological peculiarities of the attitudes of Ukrainians to the internally displaced persons and the course of such attitudes. Five types of attitudes towards the internally displaced persons as to refugees, migrants, “committed people”, adventurers and freeloaders have been identified by means of the media contentqualitative analysis. The results of the quantitative studyhave provided evidence of correlation between the identified attitudes and different psychological conditions of the respondents. Thus, respondents who consider internally displaced persons to be refugees display the highest level of tolerance, friendliness, adaptability and stress resistance. The attitude to the internally displaced persons as to migrants is typical for somewhat anxious respondents who tend to excessive control and believe that the displaced persons haven notexperienced any serious threat. The respondentswho perceive the internally displaced persons mainly as “committed people” feel distrust, frustration and aggression, and are maladjusted and unfriendly. The respondents who find the majority of the internally displaced persons “adventurers” are quite aggressive, hostile, with an external locus of control, and not inclined to accept others. The study participantswho believe the internally displaced persons to be “freeloaders” can be characterized byincreased anxiety, rigidity, hostility and selfishness. They refuse to help the internally displaced persons as they believe they are mostly immoral people. The destructive psychological peculiarities of the attitudes to the internally displaced persons are associated with complex emotional conditions, suppressed emotions, non-reflected experience.
