Abstract

The article analyzes theoretical approaches to the study of intellectual giftedness, describes its structure, types of intellectually gifted people. The evolution of views on the problem of intellectual giftedness diagnostics have been considered: making the connection between giftedness and high level of intelligence; interpretation of giftedness as a combination of intelligence, creativity and personality traits; understanding the giftedness as externally manifested success; taking into consideration the micro- and macro environment of development. The article describes basic approaches of the identification of intellectually gifted personality. It emphasizes on the diversity of manifestations of giftedness in general and intellectual giftedness in particular. The cognitive and personality features of intellectually gifted students, which distinguish them from the student's community, have been considered in the article. The emphasis is placed on the importance of using alternative procedures for the identification of gifted children. In particular, the change from the study of specific psychological qualities, properties, states, etc. to the study of personality in general, endowed with a unique inner world, capable of self-development and self-realization. It is important to shift the emphasis on the psychological and pedagogical support in general and diagnostic activities in particular. This ensures the focus on the study of specific psychological qualities, properties, states for the evaluation of integral personality, endowed with a unique inner world and also capable of self-development and self-realization.
