Abstract
This work presents the results of an empirical fMRI study of understanding metaphorical images. We performed BOLD scans of 20 healthy participants in a block-design experiment. The results of mixed effects analysis showed activation patterns in somatosensory association cortical areas in both hemispheres. Also recruited were the right inferior frontal gyrus; left supramarginal and medial temporal gyri; and several zones in the hippocampal area. Thus neural processing of visual metaphors contralaterally mirrors the findings of verbal metaphor comprehension studies and supports the hypothesis that semantic system is transmodal and represented bilaterally, but with some graded functional hemispheric specialization.
