Abstract

The article is about a new book for middle school children by modern Ukrainian writer I. Andrusyak. The story "Sulfur to Gunpowder" is built under the genre and style features of historical and adventure prose with elements of intertextual play on the chivalrous and heroic epics. At the same time, the work is characterized by the individual style of I. Andrusyak’s story: ease of presenting a complex problem, humor as a kind of seasoning for the perception of difficult or tragic themes, an extensive associative field of the text, clear values, the cognitive and developmental richness of the story, selective and at the same time good, warm, life-giving energy. The most important in I. Andrusyak’s story "Sulfur to Gunpowder" is the search for ways of self-identification of Ukrainians, ways to revive self-esteem, dignity, self-confidence. The author offers a new tone (not sad, but militant, with humor, elements of the game) and a new point of view on the past, calling to know the true nature and values of their ancestors, as well as to rethink their mistakes. Ukrainians must reach a new level of development, learn to clearly understand the challenges of the present, think and fight, not look for "someone to join" and give in to the brazen and deceitful new "orthodox kings."
