Abstract
The paper is devoted to analyses of contemporary Western approaches to theory, methodology and the practical issues of international university rankings as far as the further development of situation in this area. The author makes stress on negative consequences of contemporary, sometimes imperfect, systems of ranking evaluation of university activities. During the decade of its existence international university rankings become influential tool of educational policy and this tendency would take place in the future.
