Abstract

6. Working with selfies in phototherapy as a type of media-art-therapy occupies a special place. In the few studies of psychologists and psychiatrists, selfies is considered as a manifestation of mental disorders, a subculture and a form of addiction. We define the selfie as a means of diagnostics, self-discovery and solving psychological problems in art therapy practice. A selfie provides an opportunity to realistically assess your qualities, to maintain a level of self-esteem. A selfie is self-analysis based on the study of one’s own face, and at the same time, it is an opportunity to express one’s feelings, impressions, and emotions to others by publishing a selfie on the Internet. A selfie reflects a person’s desire to see himself from the side, as others see him. During making a selfie, the client is both the subject – the creator, and the object of the action (photography), and his image itself is a creative product. Self-presentation, communication, self-expression, self-identification, selfknowledge, reflection, and receiving support are all among the highlighted functions of selfies. The motives for creating and spreading selfies as we consider are the needs for attention, approval, self-expression, self-affirmation, communication, self-promotion, compensation, imitation of fashion. The selfie in media-art-therapy will be used as an opportunity for external expression of the internal state, creative self-expression and self-knowledge, an indicator of internal changes. Art therapeutic work with selfies usually uses all the creative possibilities of art therapy related to the creation of visual images. Client cases illustrate the possibilities of using selfies for diagnostics, expressing emotions and receiving support, expanding the range of human behavioral patterns, and changing in communication strategies. A selfie can be used to explore the manifestations of one’s emotions, work with self-image, and recover from traumatic events. Selfie work with teenagers and young adults is effective when clients are exploring self-image and forming a self-concept. Selfie helps to find ways for self-improvement. It was concluded that working with selfies is a powerful means of media-art-therapy and contributes to the client’s personal development.
