Abstract

Relevance. In the conditions of war, the risks and dangers of the professional activity of emergency services specialists, particularly the fire and rescue service, increase significantly. Adding to the complexities and uncertainties of extreme peacetime situations is a wide range of dangerous situations caused by war, new and unconventional threats, and risks. The purpose of the research is to review the scientific literature using the search terms «extreme situation,» «risk,» «risk perception,» and «safety» and on their basis to identify individual and group factors that can influence the perception of risks and safety by fire and rescue specialists’ services. Methods and methodology. The review of scientific literature was carried out using the search terms «extreme situation», «risk», «risk perception», and «security». It was limited only to scientific publications, which had to contain, in addition to the mentioned, the terms: «firefighters», «rescuers», «policemen», and «military. » The analysis of the sources was carried out within two research traditions: an approach based on personal traits and an approach based on social cognition. Results. The analyze shows that in recent decades, scientific research on risk perception has focused on cognitive, emotional, and social factors influencing such perception. People's fears and anxieties are also most often investigated, their fears or predisposition to risky behavior of individuals are assessed, and the probability of events is determined. At that time, the relationship between risk perception and safety and how this relationship affects behavior in an extreme situation remains outside the attention of researchers. We see prospects for further research in developing diagnostic tools, in particular, appropriate scales with acceptable reliability and validity.
