Abstract

The article reveals the importance of elderly study motivation on education. The definition of study motivation this age category as a system of biological, social, personal factors that control the behavior of the elderly and encourage them to join the learning process to realize their own capabilities and abilities, unleashing inner potential to maintain a decent quality of life. The typology of educational motives of the elderly is presented according to the following criteria: purposefulness – social, cognitive and personal motives; modality – positive and negative motives; localization of stimuli of activity – external and internal motives, and their role in providing educational activity. The factors that determine the development of motivation for study activities are identified - intra-personal, interpersonal and factors operating at the community level. Important intra-personal factors include a conscious desire to learn, integration into public life, a sense of need and usefulness; the presence of cognitive activity; independent choice of the method of obtaining knowledge, etc. Among interpersonal factors is the creation of a favorable learning environment, atmosphere of support and security; understanding the uniqueness of each elderly student; formation of the belonging feeling to the group, etc. Motivating factors operating at the community level include understanding the importance of the educational activities of the elderly and developing appropriate public policy measures for their involvement in the system of lifelong education. It is concluded that the development of study motivation is associated with the creation of conditions for the awakening of one's own motives, a motivational environment enriched with stimuli, in which the motives of the elderly are actualized.
