Abstract

Remesnyk N.Y. Features of psychological correction of selfacceptance of overweight people. - Qualifying scientific work on the rights of the manuscript. Dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the specialty 19.00.01 – General Psychology, History of Psychology. – H.S. Kostiuk Institute of Psychology of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv, 2023. The thesis presents a theoretical generalization and a new solution to the problem of self-acceptance of overweight people as a multifactorial emotional and evaluative component of the system of personality attitudes. The solution to this problem lies in determining the holistic nature of the phenomenon of self-acceptance, finding out the impact of its underdeveloped components on eating behavior, and determining on this basis the possibilities of correcting self-acceptance and overweight therapy. The development of positive self-acceptance was considered in the context of the relationship with psychological well-being and personal autonomy as a psychological mechanism of direct influence on a person's attitude to his or her own life, which is a criterion of self-esteem and a factor of self-realization. The main purpose of the study is to identify the peculiarities of self-acceptance of overweight people and to develop a comprehensive program for the correction of overweight based on the development of internal resources of the individual and to test its effectiveness. The achievement of this goal was facilitated by the solution of the research tasks, which analyzed the state of theoretical and methodological development of the problem of understanding the content and structure of the phenomenon of self-acceptance of the individual, its relationship with body image and overweight; substantiated the methodological foundations and methodological support for the study of personal factors in the formation of eating disorders; empirically determined the psychological characteristics of overweight people and the development of positive self-acceptance as a factor in the correction of eating disorders. Scientific research and achievements are presented in three chapters of the dissertation. In the first chapter – "Theoretical foundations of the study of the phenomenon of self-acceptance of personality in the context of eating disorders and overweight" – theoretical generalization of research on the phenomenon of self-acceptance of personality on the basis of humanistic, psychodynamic and positive approach is carried out; the concept of self-acceptance as a complex dynamic formation of personality is defined, its structural components are identified; the conditions for the development of positive self-acceptance are analyzed; the positive influence of self-acceptance on self-development of personality is investigated; the phenomenon of self-acceptance of a personality is considered in terms of the development of its primary and secondary actual abilities (according to Pezeshkian) and their interrelation; the peculiarities of the emotional sphere in overweight people are analysed. On the basis of the theoretical and methodological analysis, a theoretical model of positive self-acceptance of a personality as a multifactorial emotional and evaluative component of the system of personality attitudes is presented, which includes the following components: self-esteem, self-respect, self-confidence, positive body image, low internal conflict, awareness of one's own needs and values, and understanding of internal processes (one's own emotions, motives and beliefs). It has been established that positive self-acceptance is associated with psychological well-being and personal autonomy, and as a psychological mechanism directly affects a person's attitude to their own life, which is a criterion of self-esteem and a factor in self-realization. The second chapter, "Empirical Study of Psychological Features of Self-Acceptance in Overweight People," highlights the methodological foundations of an empirical study of the psychological features of self-acceptance in overweight people and the analysis of its results. Conceptual approaches to the study of factors of self-acceptance of overweight people, stages, process of empirical research, and the sample of subjects are highlighted. The choice of diagnostic tools in accordance with the objectives of the study to determine the formation of components of positive self-acceptance and diagnosis of eating disorders is substantiated. The empirical study reveals the peculiarities of the relationship between insufficient self-acceptance and unhealthy eating habits; the peculiarities of the emotional sphere in overweight people are revealed. It was found that deficiencies in self-acceptance negatively affect the perception of one's own body image; social standards of attractiveness have a significant impact on self-acceptance, the expected attitude of others, and satisfaction with one's own life. Positive self-acceptance has a positive effect on the perception of body image, increases the feeling of psychological well-being and is a factor in self-development. The factors of positive self-acceptance of a personality are determined: autosympathy, which supports self-acceptance; ability to maintain good, emotionally warm relationships with other people; active position. It was found that overweight subjects have a number of distinctive characteristics compared to people with normal weight. They are characterized by a lower level of self-acceptance; lower control of activities; a tendency to inactivity; blurred and unclear goals; dissatisfaction with themselves; a tendency to self-criticism; a sense of alienation from other people; and withdrawal in relationships with others. Predictors that have the greatest impact on the development of eating disorders (according to the scales of external and emotional eating behavior) are identified: desire to achieve high personal results and a tendency to perfectionism; functional, cold relationships between parents or quarrels between them and, as a result, the inability to show love and tenderness to oneself; an essential feature of external eating behavior is excessive interest in external stimuli, despite signals of hunger or satiety; a combination of a number of factors: Poor self-control, active or passive lifestyle, genetic factors, or a combination of externalizing and emotionalizing behaviors. It has been proven that the most influential factors in reducing self-acceptance are: deficits in the emotional and contact spheres, i.e., the inability to understand, contain, and cope with one's own emotions; distancing or inability to solve problematic situations in close relationships; problematic, cold, or dysfunctional relationships in the parental family; inability or unwillingness to take a proactive position in a problematic situation. The third chapter – "Methodological foundations for the development of positive self-acceptance of the individual by means of positive psychotherapy" – presents a theoretical model of a comprehensive program for the development of positive self-acceptance of the individual. Based on the analysis of the results of theoretical and empirical research, a comprehensive program for the development of positive self-acceptance as a factor in the correction of eating disorders, based on the methodology of humanistic and psychodynamic approaches and aimed at developing positive self-acceptance, based on the development of internal resources of the individual, was substantiated, developed and tested. The program combined a theoretical part aimed at psychoeducation, discussion of the provisions reflecting the essence of the main factors of positive self-acceptance, and a practical part, which included practical tasks aimed at implementing the main objectives of the program. The program combines self-help methods, the basics of psychoeducation, breathing and mindfulness practices, and exercises to develop the individual's current abilities. The proposed program helped participants develop the ability to regulate their emotions and reduce emotional stress, which in turn improved self-understanding and had a positive impact on self-acceptance, self-confidence, and self-esteem. Mastering self-help skills will provide a supportive effect of psychotherapy in the long term. The effectiveness of the program for improving eating behavior by increasing self-acceptance has been proven, as evidenced by the formative experiment. The goal of the program is to improve the perception of one's own body and optimize eating behavior. The scientific novelty and theoretical significance of the study is that: for the first time, a systematic consideration of the phenomenon of self-acceptance as a factor in eating disorders was carried out; the psychological features and patterns of the relationship between self-acceptance and body image and overweight are revealed; a theoretical model of self-acceptance as a holistic phenomenon is developed; the role of internal resources, the integration of which contributes to the development of positive self-acceptance of the individual, is revealed; scientific ideas about the psychological resources of preserving and strengthening a positive self-attitude of a person are supplemented; it is proved that positive self-acceptance of a personality is achieved by actualizing its internal resources, which contribute to resistance to stress factors, self-satisfaction and psychological well-being; the substantiation of ways and means of increasing positive self-acceptance of the individual has been further developed. The practical significance of the research results is that the structure and psychological features of the development of positive self-acceptance as a factor in the correction of eating disorders are determined; methodological tools for a comprehensive study of personal factors in the formation of eating disorders are proposed; the relationship between eating disorders and internal resources of the individual is operationalized, which makes it possible to apply the results of the study in correctional programs for The provisions of the dissertation can be used in the development of training courses in psychological counseling, the basics of psychotherapy, social and psychological training, which will improve the quality of professional training of specialists in sociological professions. The results of the study can be applied in the practice of various psychological services to develop programs to overcome the problems of a subjective sense of a decrease in the value of life.
