Abstract

The connection of positive psychological aspects of personality with the peculiarities of loneliness experience is studied in the paper. It is demonstrated that the world for a person is always mediated by social relations, that loneliness separates a person from the world and that it is subjectively a rather unpleasant psychological state. It is noted that, on the other hand, there is always place for happiness and other happiness-associated phenomena, which counteract various factors which generate anxiety, depression and other negative emotional states. It is pointed out, that there are numerous empirical investigations which demonstrate negative correlation between happiness and loneliness. The author raises an issue whether the results of mentioned investigations are relevant for Ukrainian sample and whether they can just be the product of a certain sociocultural environment. It is revealed that the presence of idea about oneself as a lonely person in the image of self correlates negatively with the general level of happiness. It is logical that optimism, being a complex of certain cognitive attitudes, negatively correlates with cognitive aspects of loneliness, including image of self as a lonely person. In general our investigation shows that optimists shouldn’t consider themselves to be lonely people, but, on the contrary, they are likely to feel themselves to be connected with other people, consider themselves to be a part of some community, etc. A hypothesis is made that such component of optimism as persuasion in the continuous character of positive events influence on person’s life makes the last a factor which counteracts the formation of image of self as a lonely person. Besides, it is determined that faith in the continuous character of positive events influence contributes to the decline of alienation level and to the establishment of significant ties with other people and with the world as a whole. A person with this component of optimism is less inclined to suffer from unhealthy feeling of loneliness, and this, undoubtedly, contributes to his/her psychological well-being.
