Abstract

The article examines the specific genesis of social intelligence during preschool childhood by reviewing scientific works of Ukrainian and foreign psychologists. Via theoretical analysis, the sources of social intelligence development during preschool age are determined. The main mental processes are highlighted by means of which social intelligence develops during preschool childhood. These processes include: emotions, memory, imagination, feelings, moral aspect, self-awareness, will, which are developed systematically via a pre-schooler’s self-realization in three areas: relationship with a close adult; relationship with society; relationship with peers. During the specified age period, the external and internal worlds are differentiated, so thoughts and feelings (one’s own and others’) are formed into an independent reality, become the subject of a child’s interest, and different points of view, intentions and actions become partially coordinated, and therefore, a child tries to step onto another person’s position and offers his/her partner to try on his/her position. The essence of social intelligence formation and development during preschool age is substantiated on the basis of the competence approach, which is explained in the Basic Component of Preschool Education (BCPE) and the Concept of the New Ukrainian School. Within the framework of BCPE, social intelligence is mainly developed by teachers and psychologists in the educational areas “Personal competence”, “Child in society” and “Child’s speech”. Social intelligence is developed without interruption during transition from preschool to primary school education by development of communicative, social and civic competence within the framework of the Concept of the New Ukrainian School. Our future scientific studies will be aimed at the development and testing of measuring set to study social intelligence for preschool children who show normative typical development and who show intellectual difficulties of a mild degree, by taking into account the psychological features of its genesis.
