Abstract

Teaching the younger generation about democracy, making them aware of democratic values, human rights and freedoms and the need to protect them, and developing civic competencies of students remain key tasks of modern Ukrainian education. Understanding the principles and functioning of the parliamentary system of Ukraine is a prerequisite for active participation of citizens in making important decisions and the irreversibility of the country's democratic development. The methodological guide "Our Parliament: Researching, Understanding, Influencing" is aimed at raising awareness of students about democracy and state-building, in particular about the development of parliamentarism, the role and functions of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the activities of MPs and the possibility of civic and political participation of the younger generation of Ukrainians. A systematic approach to the study of the parliamentary system at all levels of school education is proposed, which includes interactive methods, role-playing games, debates, and project activities. The manual should be used in the implementation of the elective course on the basics of representative democracy and parliamentarism "Our Parliament: Researching, Understanding, Influencing" for students of primary, basic and complete secondary education and out-of-school education. This manual and the curriculum of the elective course of the same name together constitute sufficient educational and methodological support for civic parliamentary education in Ukrainian educational institutions. The materials of the manual will be useful in the activities of educational and civic organizations for teaching the younger generation the basics of representative democracy and parliamentarism. It is addressed to a wide audience of educators and civic activists who work with children and youth and educate the younger generation on the principles of education for democratic citizenship.
