Abstract

One of the school reform tasks is to create a safe educational environment in which participants in the educational process will feel physical, psychological, informational, and social security, comfort, and wellbeing. Authors of this article, based on a theoretical problem analysis, propose their own view on the“safe educational environment” concept and substantiate the empirical research criteria and indicators. With the help of the authors' developed questionnaire, a students’ and teachers survey of 10 secondary schools from different Ukraine regions was conducted. The survey purpose was to identify participants' subjective perceptions in the educational process about protection from various types of psychological abuse. The study results showed that the educational environment is not perceived as safe for a significant number of respondents. In particular, teachers do not feel safe from students' ridicule and insults and are ignored by colleagues. In turn, students do not feel protected from ridicule, insults, and neglect by classmates and from ignoring ridicule, and humiliation by teachers. Based on the obtained results, opportunities for the psychological violence cases’ prevention and systemic influence on all participants in the educational process have been identified. Despite the problem scale and complexity, educational institutions have significant opportunities to prevent violence and systemic influence at all participants in the educational process, to form a behavior model based on mutual respect, and to prevent violence in interpersonal relationships and joint students’ activities.
