Abstract

The article present an attempt to study the features and leading motives for use of social media by young people. The components included in the structure of civic competence are defined (civic knowledge, civic guidelines, civic responsibility, civic skills and abilities, social ties, civic participation). The following features of the use of social media by young people have been established: social media such as Telegram, TikTok, Youtube, Twitter are the main source of news about events in the country/world for young people; young people consider Telegram, Instagram, and TikTok to be the most relevant of them; for people with an active lifestyle, Telegram, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram are the most suitable, according to young people. It was found that not all social media have the same potential for developing the civic competence of student youth. So, Facebook, Twitter and video hosting YouTube can be used most effectively for this purpose, the Telegram messenger also has a fairly high potential for use, and the Viber messenger and the TikTok social network have the lowest potential. The obtained results allowed to identify two groups of motives (target and instrumental) for the use of social media by young people for the development of civic competence. It is defined that among the motives for the use of social media by student youth a leading role belongs to: 1) self-expression and self-exposure – declaring one's own civic position; 2) self-identification with representatives of social groups who have common views on certain issues; 3) expanding ideas about the rights and responsibilities of citizens; 4) opportunity to discuss socially significant, political and legal issues; 5) generation of ideas and relevant content (posts / texts, audio and video content, comics, memes) on socially significant, political and legal issues.
