Abstract

The article reveals one of the pages of national intellectual history, dedicated to two figures – the American philosopher Matthew Lipman and the Ukrainian pedagogue Vasyl Sukhomlynskyi. The author of the article united them from the point of view of a single theme – philosophy for children, to which they dedicated a significant part of their professional aspirations. And although they worked in different years and in different conditions, the American philosopher was able to get acquainted with the figure and work of V. Sukhomlinskyi by correspondence with the author of this article. By means of epistolary, M. Lipman’s attitude to V. Sukhomlinskyi’s artistic miniatures as a philosophy for children, their inclusion in educational and methodical literature for American schoolchildren is covered. The microhistorical approach used in this article has revealed the importance of individual personalities for the development of philosophy for children as a common pedagogical and philosophical heritage. A cognitive page in the history of development and dissemination of ideas of such a relevant and popular phenomenon as philosophy for children can be the acquaintance of the modern reader with the indirect – in time and space – acquaintance of the famous American philosopher, creator of “Philosophy for Children” as a special course of preschool and primary education. Lipman (1922–2010) with the figure and legacy of the Ukrainian Vasyl Sukhomlynsky (1918–1970).
