Abstract

The article is dedicated to the development of the theoretical and methodological basis of the development of a new textbook on the integrated course in history and civic education for 5th grade “Exploring History and Society”. The textbook is based on the requirements of the State Standard (2020) which requires further reformation of the secondary school education on the basis of the New Ukrainian school. Ideas of the New Ukrainian School are also realized in typical and model curricula for grades 5–6. Analysis of the documents described above shows cardinal changes to the content that should be approved in education for secondary school students. Among these changes are the following: active integration of course contents both within the educational fields and between them, change towards an active model of education with the use of appropriate types of educational activities of students, adaptational quality of the courses for 5th and 6th grades, orientation on forming of key skills and competencies. Authors proved that a modern textbook should be a complex, multidimensional model of the educational process. The contents of this textbook are predetermined by the need for the organization of active student participation and include different types of texts, assignments, guidelines, non-textual components all being organically tied together by a specific design. It by turning every paragraph into a closed cycle of competency-based education from the planning of results on learning of the content to mastering new knowledge and skills by students, and assessment of their achievements. Through the adoption of the textbook on integrated course students should acquire a scientific worldview and complete understanding of society’s functioning that would help them to successfully realize their potential. The textbook also must provide for civic and historical competency of students (knowledge, skills, civic views). It means that the methodological apparatus of the textbook has to help students to use their knowledge in practice.
