Abstract

Relevance of the research: Violence in the educational environment is a social and psychological phenomenon characterized by the use of any action taken by one person to another (student-student, teacher-student, student-teacher) in the educational institution’s conditions, resulting in injury to the physical and/or mental health of the individual. Results. In this article, a theoretical review of the problem allowed the authors to highlight the empirical criteria of the most common types of violence in the school, namely: fighting and bodily harm; insult and humiliation; isolation (neglect, boycott), harassment; transfer to another educational institution as a result of various forms of violence; stealing and damaging of personal possessions; extortion of money. Conclusions. Based on the empirical study’s well-founded criteria and indicators, the authors surveyed students and teaching staff from 10 general secondary schools in different Ukraine regions. The study results showed that the causes and forms of violence in the educational establishment are extremely complex and varied, not isolated from one another. Therefore, research into the phenomenon of violence in the educational environment and the causes that give rise to it must be comprehensive. Based on the results obtained, it is established that psychological prophylaxis, as a special type of activity of a psychological service worker, should be aimed at preserving, strengthening, and developing all participants’ mental health in the educational process.
